MAFDC Historical Background

The following is a history of the establishment of MAFDC as well as some of the successes that have been achieved

The establishment of MAFDC

The establishment of MAFDC was first mooted during the Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College (MAFSC) Board of Governors Meeting on 23 August 1978, on the need to have a military institution of higher learning in the country.

MAFDC establishment initiative

This initiative led to the decision by the Armed Forces Council (AFC) at its 192nd Meeting held on 31 May 1979 to form a committee to study and recommend the establishment of a Malaysian Armed Forces Joint Services Staff College (MAFJSSC). Subsequently, the Committee headed by the Deputy Chief of General Staff made an in-depth study on the organization, logistical and financial requirements for the proposed institution.

Accepted and Approved

The Committee's Report was accepted and approved by the AFC during its 194th Meeting on 27 September 1979.

College established

The College was established on 1 April 1980 then known as the Joint Services Staff College (JSSC).

Rebranding to MAFDC | MPAT

However, it was renamed as the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College (MAFDC) or Maktab Pertahanan Angkatan Tentera (MPAT) in the Malay language on 8 January 1981 consistent with its roles and tasks to conduct defence studies course. The inauguration of the College was marked with the official opening of the first course on 16 September 1981 by the Right Honourable Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Duration of the course

Since its establishment until the year 1996, the duration of the course in the College was 6 months. From 1997-2001, the duration of the course in the College was extended to 9 months. On successful completion of the course in the College, Course Participants are awarded the College Diploma.
1996 - 2001

Collaboration With National University of Malaysia

In 2002, in collaboration with the National University of Malaysia (NUM), the course was extended to 11 months and subsequently to 1 year. Successful graduates are awarded the Master of Social Science (Defence Studies) degree in addition to the College Diploma. To date, the MAFDC has produced 1188 graduates (629 Army, 179 Navy, 225 Air Force, 72 Police, 36 Civilians and 47 International Course Participants). Currently, the MAFDC is the highest institution for military learning in the country.
2002

MS ISO 9001:2000

On 10 July 2007, MAFDC received its first MS ISO 9001:2000 certification. This year on 10 July 2010, this certification was upgraded to the new MS ISO 9001:2008. This certification only confirms that the management of the course in MAFDC is in compliance with the standards of the International Organization of Standardization.
