Kuala Lumpur, 23 Nov – The ASEAN 2016 Wasatiyyah Seminar, held for the very first time, was co-organised by the Malaysian Armed Forces KAGAT and the Malaysian Wasatiyyah Institute (IWM) took place at the MAF Officers' Mess, Kuala Lumpur from 22 Nov-24 Nov 16. Officiated by the Malaysian Defence Minister, the seminar attracted 278 paticipants from the ASEAN countries as well as local participants from uniformed organisations and civil servants.
Carrying the theme, Wasatiyyah: Unity of Ummah - Countering The Threat of Militancy Extremism/Terrorism, the seminar was held with the following objectives:
1. To highlight and debate current issues on Extremism/Terorism from all angles.
2. Formulate best resolution to overcome Extremism/Terrorism threats in ensuring safety in the region for the benefit of human kind.
3. To clear negative perceptions and religion-related on Extremism/Terrorism.
4. To strenghten ties amongst participants and nations in the region.
The word 'Wasatiyyah' carries the meaning of moderation, that potrays the real Islamic teachings and Islam never condone extremism.
5 speakers and 3 moderators, including 2 from abroad, shared their views and experience with the participants. Imam Asim Al Hafiz, the Islamic Advisor to the United Kingdom's Chief of Defence Force and HE Abdulrahman M Al-Zaid from Saudi Arabia took the stage to enlightened the seminar.
YB Senator Dato’ Dr. Asyraf Wajdi bin Dato’ Dusuki, Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister Department, the Malaysian Chief of Defence Force, YBhg General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Haji Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin, Chief of Army, YM Gen Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi bin Raja Mohamed Noor, Deputy Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Dato’ Anuwi bin Hassan, Deputy Chief of Air Force, Lt Gen Dato’ Sri Hj Affendi bin Buang RMAF, IWM Head of Director, YBhg Dato’ Hj Mohd Yusof bin Din and senior officers from all Government agencies were present.
